After the disappointment of football failure on wednesday night and a few days to calm down without posting, I’ve decided to let bygones be bygones and be grown up about it. Yes I stopped stomping my feet and sulking (almost) and started looking for stuff again. Only a couple of minutes into the search for something cool I found these little puppies.

These lollipop looking green efforts could actually be quite useful… If like me you forget to water your plants all the time, you can simply stick one of these into the pot and it’ll tell you when it wants watering, like when I start to drop subtle hints to my girlfriend about wanting a cup of tea.

I started thinking about this and realised that the plant isn’t pressing a button or actually using some form of intelligence to inform you using a the light on the lollipop thing via ESP or something, it’s simply a clever bit of technology that figures out when the soil is too dry, and flashes at you. Suddenly it isn’t as great as it might have been, but still worth a gander. I think I’ll be getting one or two to stop me forgetting.

Now next post will be a big sign that flashes above my head, when I want a cup of tea so my girlfriend can just get me one… Liking it. Just not the big pointy stick bit.

So for now we look towards the techy temples to find more enlightenment, keep staring, for soon you will become tech blind.

It isn’t often that something I have longed for, for a long time comes along. My favourite band is Pearl Jam and their gig posters are great pieces of design, something which I spend most of my days doing (arguably).

For years I’ve been collecting small jpegs and Gifs of them from ebay and other internet stores and keeping them in a folder on my hard drive, looking at them and generally enjoying them. I bought a book on the art of music poster design simply because there was a section on the Ames brothers design studio who produce the vast majority of the posters, there are a shit-load more posters in there which are just as inspirational, but the opportunity to get my hands on, albeit small, images of the posters by the Ames brothers.

Occassionally, I splashed out on some of the best ones (In my opinion) buying ones from the 2003 US tour and one from the 2006 Australian tour, but wished for an anthology of the posters produced by them.

Then, this week, as I checked the Pearl Jam website for news and other stuff that a fan looks for, I was greeted by a book which made my day.

Being a designer, I tend to spend a lot on books to do with my job, but so rarely does a book come along which I more than something to do with work for me, it becomes pure indulgance. Total and utter, unadulterated joy.

I’ve seen some of the pages within this book, on the pearljam website, and it looks great. Check out the link, hopefully I can get my hands on it sooner rather than later.

YAY!

Let’s raise our hands to the sky and thank the great lord for design, for it makes our daily lives so much easier. (Unless you do it for a living.)
